Dispatch from the Patch…

Will this make Dave Black “green” with envy? I think not. Dave’s patch sorry, Becky’s patch is very impressive and when he isn’t looking I covet it! Actually while we are on the topic of Dave do you think there is any chance we could get him to blog with WordPress? I would love to receive his posts via RSS. Dave? ;)

Back to the patch. I would say we had an average winter harvest this year but it was by far our best yet. We are still in the midst of trialing the layout so it was a bit hit and miss. This year our cabbages, broccoli and cauliflower were planted too close to the fence (for winter). They didn’t receive enough sunlight (they would have in summer). That aside we still enjoyed a small harvest of brassicas. Our success story in my opinion has been the beetroot. Have you ever eaten a vegetable which tasted so sweet roasted? It was divine! We planted carrots and celery and enjoyed some wonder herbs! As I said, in my mind it was an average harvest but well worth the trial and error. We learnt plenty for next winter.

This week we planted some tomato seedlings (in pots) and potatoes. We really wanted Dutch Cream potatoes but unfortunately they were sold out. Desiree and Coliban again this season. They were super nice last year!
