Dave Black lamented last week the end of his summer growing season. Well, one person’s lament is another’s joy because yesterday we planted the last of our summer crop! How do I know summer is upon us? Easy, the berries begin to pour forth in abundance!
This year our crop has been planted a little later than usual because I have been finishing my Masters. But now we have the following planted: Tomatoes, corn, beetroot, carrots, potatoes, onion, cucumbers, capsicum, pumpkin and zucchini! Add to this list our summer fruits: Apples, passion-fruit grapes, nectarines, apricots, peacharines, figs, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries! It is looking like a bountiful summer of home grown organic produce! The list of patch veggies seems a little light but you’d be amazed at what you can make from this group. I look forward to bolognese, green mustard pickles, salads galore and loads of preserved fruit! But most of all I love that our kids learn where food comes from and how it is grown. It is wonderful to see how God has ordered creation!
Hopefully through out the season I can provide a photographic brag book for you all to salivate but for now think about the wonderful berries we are enjoying. I do have one question: Does anyone have advice on building a trellis for tomatoes?
Grace and peace, Mark
